Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Station: Hygienic Wall Cladding as part of the biggest construction site in Europe

Work has begun on the workers’ accommodation campus at Hinkley Point C and BioClad is supplying and installing its antimicrobial internal wall lining for the units to provide a fully hygienic environment for those working on the project.

About Hinkley Point

Hinkley Point C will produce reliable, low-carbon electricity to power around 6 million homes for 60 years and will aim to generate 25,000 job opportunities. At peak construction, 5,600 people will work at the Somerset site.

As part of the development, two separate accommodation campuses are being built to house construction workers – one at the Hinkley Point C site and the other nearby in Bridgwater. The campuses will have a total of approximately 1,500 en-suite rooms, all featuring BioClad antimicrobial internal linings. BioClad hygienic wall cladding is a cost-effective alternative to tiling and offers superior hygiene through it’s silver-ion technology which kills microbes by 99%.

The Hinkley Point C project, which is being built by EDF Energy, will include two UK EPR nuclear reactor units, cooling water infrastructure, service and ancillary buildings, a sea wall, a public information centre four park and ride facilities to transport workers by bus to the Hinkley Point C development site, a temporary jetty and refurbished wharf.

Largest Wall Lining Project Ever

In trying to understand the scale of this project, one can make a comparison to the investment made to deliver the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics. Over 45,000 square metres of BioClad’s wall linings will be installed at Hinkley Point C.

Director Lindsay McKenzie said: “I believe Hinkley Point C marks the largest project within BioClad’s industry sector ever. We’re extremely pleased to aid the construction of this fantastic project that marks an exciting future for the UK’s energy industry and will provide thousands of job opportunities.”

Modular Building

The overall project is under construction by Laing O’Rourke with Caledonian Modular producing the accommodation. Caledonian Modular is an off-site building solution provider. The project comprises purpose-built units that are constructed and then transported as complete units.

Caledonian Modular was awarded the contract for the accommodation and has partnered with BioClad to provide high-quality en-suite bathrooms which are completely lined with BioClad antimicrobial PVC sheets with welded joints to provide a totally hygienic and waterproof environment.
