Bringing children into the world is one of the most wonderful things we do as human beings. The joy of a first child is indescribable, and you think it can never be repeated. It can. With another child!
But along with the joy of bringing a new life into the world, there are also the stresses that go with the territory. We all want healthy children, and thankfully the majority of us are blessed with them. So when something happens within a maternity unit that neither we nor the medical professionals can control, it is only ever going to increase the level of stress, especially on the mother.
Earlier this month, six babies were infected with MRSA in a Cambridgeshire maternity unit run by Cambridegshire University Hospitals. The unit remained open throughout the scare, but impacted on some mothers-to-be by delaying the dates on which they were to be induced. The brother of one of the mothers-to-be explained: “She’s very stressed because she’s got a child at home. She’s trying to deal with childcare and it’s making it a very stressful time for her.” For this young Mum, the general stress of having a baby has been accentuated first by the revelation that MRSA has affected babies in the maternity unit where she is waiting to give birth, and second by concerns for her other children back at home shoud she have an extended stay.
MRSA can cause life threatening infections such as endocarditis (an infection of the inner lining of the heart) and blood poisoning. The only time that most of us will have any exposure to MRSA is when we are a patient in a hospital. MRSA can cause death in healthy adults, so new born babies are significantly more vulnerable as they fight their way into our lives.
This is why any preventative function can be so important in a healthcare environment, from basic hand washing, to the correct sterilization of surgical instruments, and the use of materials, fixtures and fittings in critical hygiene areas such as operating theatres and birthing facilities. BioClad wall panels are one of many products that offer 24/7 antimicrobial protection, being impregnated with silver ion technology that interrupts the breeding cycle of a range of micro-organisms.
Our children are so precious, whatever age they are, so let’s give them the best chance for a healthy start in life.
